Eight of the 10 men reportedly jailed for the attempted assassination of Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai were actually set free, it has emerged.

In April, officials said that 10 Taliban fighters had been found guilty and received 25-year jail terms. But sources have now confirmed that only two of the men who stood trial were convicted.

The secrecy surrounding the trial, which was held behind closed doors, raised suspicions over its validity. The court judgement - seen for the first time on Friday more than a month after the trial - claims that the two men convicted were those who shot Ms Yousafzai in 2012.

It was previously thought that both the gunmen and the man who ordered the attack had fled to Afghanistan.

Muneer Ahmed, a spokesman for the Pakistani High Commission in London, said on Friday that the eight men were acquitted because of a lack of evidence.

Saleem Marwat, the district police chief in Swat, Pakistan, separately confirmed that only two men had been convicted.

Mr Ahmed claimed that the original court judgement made it clear only two men had been convicted and blamed the confusion on misreporting.

But Sayed Naeem, a public prosecutor in Swat, told the Associated Press news agency after the trial: "Each militant got 25 years in jail. It is life in prison for the 10 militants who were tried by an anti-terrorist court." In Pakistan, a life sentence is 25 years.

Was this really about any demands (at least those made before the marches and the sit-ins), except, maybe, the very confusingly phrased singular demand, “Go Nawaz Go”? Mr Imran Khan just has the same anecdotal ‘evidence’ about rigging, which is also featuring less and less as days go on; the rest is ad hominem attacks and false bravado. Vanity is a dangerous sin. To hear Mr Khan talk about his prison days (yes, all eight of them, maybe he should just do a Gramsci and write his Prison Notebooks already) without any visible embarrassment is not that amusing anymore. The primary reason (apart from the obvious, blatant power lust) given by Mr Khan that he has tried legal avenues for fourteen months and now his ‘patience’ has run out. Really? One can only speculate on whatever subjective conception of the legal system he has in his head. What sell-out courts are these who have failed to factor in that he is a “fast bowler” and thus has a little patience, right? Never mind the institutional problems with the legal system that millions face every day. This exceptionalism is not surprising from a man, whose speeches constitute exclusively of “I, me and myself”.

Yet, there were finally some signs of humility, of ordinary human emotions from the Mighty Khan. It was moving to see him suppress giggles as he rushed to meet the ‘Chief’, almost like a child meeting his idol; an emotion countless have felt about seeing and meeting Imran Khan. Mr Khan wants to be something like General Raheel Sharif when he grows up. The Umpire has not lifted his finger yet, however, you have got his attention.

His holiness has one absolutely legitimate and non-negotiable point, the registration of theModel Town FIR. There is no grounds explaining the delay from the government; none. However, rest is hubris, at least in form, if not completely in substance. Yet, it was interesting to see his grace making the exception, letting “martyrdom”, “revolution” and other such elevated things wait, as he made his way to the “Sipahsalar”, and Dr Qadri’s speech post-meeting suggested that he had just met the perfect living specimen of humanity. It is time to dust off the old slogan from the days of infamy of the lawyers’ movement, “Chief teray jannisar, beshumaar, beshumaar” or of course the new “Raheel, teray phone say inqalaab aaye ga”.



One cannot be certain if the ‘Chief’ wanted it to be this way; however, one can be fairly certain, that the Chief is not complaining. What about the man that this country elected to govern this country? Mian Nawaz Sharif has not surrendered completely, yet he surrendered significantly on Thursday evening, when he asked the Army chief to ‘facilitate’. That was the prime minister, throwing his hands up, shrugging his shoulders, and in essence saying “I am just not up to it”. One can debate the semantics till Kingdom comes (might be sooner than Mian Sahib thinks), yet the point remains, that the prime minister buckled under pressure in the Parliament on Friday, and did not state the whole truth. Of course, Mr Imran Khan and Allama Qadri wanted the Army chief to ‘mediate’/ ‘facilitate’/ ‘arbitrate’ (no meaningful difference in this context, let go off the Oxford Dictionary) right from the get go. It was you Mian Sahib, who was supposed to resist and repose the trust in the Parliament which the Parliament reposed in you.

The Leader of the Opposition, Mr Khursheed Shah, made the best speech of the last 14 months on the floor of the House. Excellent and with moral clarity; no coups will go unresisted. Yet, that speech had to be made by Mian Sahib. Nawaz Sharif has never been a man of crisis, starting as a prodigy of General Jillani and General Ziaul Haq. The patriotic business tycoon from Punjab against the treasonous folks from the deep dark feudal fiefdoms of Sindh, he is used to having at least two out of the three power centres — the Army, Media or the Judiciary — with him. For the past five years, he had the media and judiciary who were vehemently anti-government. Now, Mian Nawaz Sharif has a government and a state with fragmented power centres, whereas one deal is good enough. It is a test of his nerves, the past is not confidence-inspiring on that account. Mian Nawaz Sharif lost his nerve and asked the Army Chief to intervene (even if demanded by Mr Imran Khan and Allama Qadri). The only honourable course of action was him apologising to the Parliament and assuring it that he is a man worthy of their trust and support. Instead he simply told a half-truth. Mian Nawaz Sharif cannot take stand like Syed Khursheed Shah, simply because he has never had the need. It has always been detached arrogance until tragedy strikes. Well, he has to learn now.

It took the government a good 14 hours to react to the news of the prime minister asking the army chief to intervene, like it took Mian Sahib the younger half a day to finally wake up to the Model Town massacre. The prime minister might survive still. Yet, Mian Nawaz Sharif has to publicly on the floor of the House apologise; he should not have asked the army chief to play a role, any role, in a political dispute, and of course if he survives start leading the house from INSIDE the house. He should now stake his job on ensuring that this is dealt with only by the Parliament and the political class.

The illusion of civilian, democratic supremacy has been the primary casualty of the fiasco thus far; the velvet coup is upon us already. The real possibility is that it will reduce the business of all governance to politics of survival; one long day at a time. The non-existent debate on social and economic rights will remain non-existent. There will be no time or energy for institutional reforms. In due course, the saturation point with the political drama, with the shenanigans of Imran and Qadri, on the one hand, and the indifference of Nawaz Sharif, will be reached on the other. The recently politicised urban middle class will go back to normal life, shrugging their shoulders and with the customary, “they are all the same”. The democratic project undermined now, will diminish further, perhaps worse, it will create a vacuum yet again for a demagogue egoist, another Imran Khan with hollow rhetoric to come in another few years. We do not need that.

Postscript: Mr Khan and Allama Qadri have brought the culture of viciousness and personal attacks in vogue. It is disturbing to hear of threats to excellent and courageous friends Mr Omar Quraishi and Mr Kamran Shafi. This government, it seems, can do little else at the moment, but it can at least track down and prosecute those who threaten dissenting voices.

Bhatta to Taliban a New trend under PTI,s Militant Wing Taliban

PESHAWAR: When the province’s law and order was discussed in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on Monday, the government acknowledged that during its rule, incidents of grenade attacks and extortion have increased, but it also claimed that other crimes had decreased.

In response to an adjournment motion presented by Qaumi Watan Party (QWP) leader Sikandar Sherpao, Minister for Public Health Engineering Shah Farman told the house the number of suicide attacks, bomb blasts and vehicle-borne attacks has decreased during the current year as compared to the past two years.

According to the minister, the fact that parties which were under attack when they were in the government are now holding open public gatherings is an indicator of improving law and order under the PTI-led government.



Presenting some statistics in the house to support his claim, Farman said suicide attacks have reduced to 10 in 2014 from 21 and 18 in 2013 and 2012, respectively. Similarly, 218 bomb attacks have been reported in K-P so far when there were 284 and 271 such attacks in 2013 and 2012, respectively.

“Vehicle-borne attacks have decreased to three during the current year as compared to six in each of the past two years,” claimed Farman. “However, the deteriorating law and order issue is not specific to Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa; the entire country is facing the repercussions of the military operations in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas,” said the minister.

Earlier, when raising the motion, QWP’s Sikandar Sherpao informed the house a total of 109,449 crimes were reported this year between January 1 and October 15. According to Sherpao, 520 terror attacks, 291 extortion cases and 831 car theft cases were also reported during this period.

“Law and order is the fundamental right of citizens and is the provincial government’s responsibility,” stated Sherpao. Awami National Party’s Mian Jaffer Shah added the situation was deteriorating every day and the government should not hide the facts and go into a defensive mode.

On a point of order, opposition leader Maulana Lutfur Rehman also raised the issue of the deteriorating law and order. According to Rehman, incidents of extortion have risen by 900%, terrorism by 30%, kidnapping by 44% and crimes against women by 40%.

“Educated and well-off people of K-P are migrating to other provinces,” stated Rehman.

The opposition leader also touched upon the subject of increasing cases of polio, saying the situation can lead to international restrictions on Pakistan.

Rehman also condemned police violence against IPDs in Bannu a couple of weeks ago.

LG polls

Moreover, during Monday’s session, Minister for Local Government and Rural Development Inayatullah Khan informed the house the government was planning to hold local government (LG) elections by the end of April next year.

In response to a question, Khan said the Election Commission of Pakistan expressed its inability to conduct LG polls under biometric system before December 2015. Therefore, the provincial government has decided to go to the polls without the technology.

Imran Khan PTI Avoids a Resolution in Praising First Pashtun Noble Prize Winner of Pakhutnkhwa Malalaa Yousafzai.

PESHAWAR: A resolution for Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai has got stuck in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly secretariat as Jamaat-i-Islami, a partner of the Pakistan Tehreek-i- Insaf-led ruling coalition in the province, has made its inclusion in the house’s agenda conditional on the tabling of a similar resolution for scientist Dr Aafia Siddiqui imprisoned in the US over links to terrorists.

Law and parliamentary affairs minister Imtiaz Shahid Qureshi told Dawn that PTI would support its coalition partner on the matter.

He expressed ignorance about keeping the resolution pending in the assembly secretariat.

The minister said some lawmakers had reservations about the resolution and was not sure if the Awami National Party would gather support of the opposition parties in favour of its pro-Malala move.

Notably PTI chairman Imran Khan had congratulated Malala on winning Nobel Peace Prize. However, the PTI-led provincial government did not issue any statement to praise the teenage activist for girls’ education.

ANP MPA Syed Jafar Shah had submitted the resolution to the assembly secretariat on October 20, which has so far not been brought on the house’s agenda.

Jafar Shah told reporters that he had requested Speaker Asad Qaisar to put the resolution on the agenda but the latter showed reluctance.

“It may create problems for us,” Jafar Shah quoted Speaker Asad Qaisar as saying during a meeting.

He said the Senate, National Assembly and Punjab and Sindh assemblies had passed resolutions to congratulate Malala Yousafzai on receiving Nobel Peace Prize.

The MPA said Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had announced to establish a university in the name of Malala. He said the young activist belonged to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and therefore, the provincial assembly should take the lead.

“I don’t know why the government is so scared about the resolution,” he said, adding that he had suggested in his resolution that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government should set up university in the name of the Nobel laureate.

When the house began proceedings on Tuesday, Pakistan People’s Party MPA Nighat Orakzai through a point of order drew Speaker Asad Qaisar’s attention towards the resolution.

She said not only Malala Yousafzai was a national hero but she was an international icon as well.

Orakzai said Malala’s efforts for the promotion of education had been recognised around the world and that she was given the Nobel Peace Prize and other international awards in recognition of her courage and contributions for the promotion of education.

“This is very unfortunate that a resolution submitted by a member of the opposition has been intentionally blocked,” she said, asking the chair to bring the resolution for Malala on the house’s agenda.

The MPA said the treasury and opposition should unanimously pass resolution.

Lawmaker of Jamaat-i-Islami Mohammad Ali Khan said Dr Aafia Siddiqui was the daughter of the nation and that he had great contributions for Islam. He said the house should pass a joint resolution for Dr Aafia and Malala.

Speaker Asad Qaisar remained silent on the point of order raised by Nighat Orakzai and moved to the agenda.

Insiders said Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl, which had been opposing Nobel Peace Prize for Malala, was also not in favour of the resolution.

A JUI-F MPA told Dawn in the assembly’s lobby that his party might not support the resolution.

“I have informed my friends (ANP lawmakers) that he will not support the resolution,” he said, adding everybody knew the motive behind the award of Nobel Peace Prize to Malala.

In January this year, the provincial government had stopped a civil society organisation from organising a ceremony at the University of Peshawar to launch the book of the Nobel laureate, I am Malala.

Similarly, the banned militant outfit, Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, had warned leading booksellers against selling the book.

Also, the house admitted an adjournment motion about the prevailing law and order situation in the province for detailed discussion.

JUI-F member Mufti Syed Janan, who moved the motion, portrayed the worst scenario in the province.

He said 44 policemen and other officials were killed in Peshawar in 2013 and the number had reached 138 in the current year.

The MPA said the nighttime flight operations at the Bacha Khan International Airport had been suspended due to the recent firing incident. He said the government had failed to provide protection to citizens and that the government’s writ had been confined to the Civil Secretariat and Police Lines.

Later, the Delimitation of Local Councils Ordinance, 2014 and Local Government (Second Amendment) Ordinance, 2014 were tabled in the house.

The assembly passed the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Civil Servants Retirement Benefits and Death Compensation Bill, 2014 after incorporating several amendments of the opposition in it.

What next for Imran Khan-Neo Asghar Khan and Symbol of Status Quo and Punjabi Establishment

IT has been more than a month since Imran Khan led his ‘independence’ march to Islamabad. The evening crowd at D-Chowk is getting thinner. The speeches have become increasingly mundane and their harsh tenor betrays growing frustration. The hopes and promises have turned into desperation.

Had it not been for Tahirul Qadri devotees camping on Constitution Avenue the show would be much poorer. Still, there is no sign of the kaptaan giving up; he would rather take the fight to the bitter end. The risk is high and the options limited. What next for Imran Khan?

Indeed, unlike in cricket, there is no ultimate winner or loser in politics. There is no such thing as victory and defeat in this power game. One lives to fight another day. But mixing cricket with politics has surely not been a good idea. Imran Khan’s imperious self and gross miscalculations have proved to be his biggest undoing.

He keeps raising the stakes while he could have easily won the day with the government conceding to the demand for electoral reforms and the re-auditing of votes. With his irrational actions and arrogance, Imran Khan now risks irreversibly damaging the political future of his party that has impacted the country’s politics so deeply, mobilising the educated urban middle class into a formidable political force.
Mixing cricket with politics has surely not been a good idea.

To be fair, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s campaign against corruption, dynastic politics and absence of rule of law has struck the right chord with the vast majority of the populace. It was the main reason for such a large number of the electorate reposing their trust in what they considered an alternative to the established parties that had failed the people. But what has always been lacking in Imran Khan is a clear vision of the change he promises.

His rants have increasingly turned into empty rhetoric. Imran Khan’s views on critical political, social and economic issues are inconsistent with his slogan for change. His political outlook is much more conservative, seeking to take the country backward. His stance on militancy and the Taliban reflect a twisted worldview. He may have the charisma but he is certainly not the material that leaders of change are made of. His recent actions bear testimony to this fact.

For sure, the PTI’s latest campaign has shaken both the government and the opposition parties out of their deep slumber in a situation where there’s growing public disenchantment with the present political order. The sit-in in front of Parliament House for more than a month is itself a unique feat in Pakistan’s political history. Consequently, parliament has been reactivated to bring political forces together to save the system.

But the ongoing protests have also exposed the political immaturity and opportunism of the PTI leadership. The party seems to have based its entire strategy on the hope or maybe some kind of assurance of intervention by a third force to oust the Sharif government. Unsurprisingly, a feeling of triumph was palpable when the army chief entered the scene to play the role of arbiter. But the moment was short-lived.

Perhaps, the PTI’s biggest miscalculation was the illusion that it could mobilise a tsunami with hundreds and thousands of people storming Islamabad. But it turned out to be a disappointing show with only a few thousand supporters joining the march that started from Lahore on Independence Day.

In fact, the month-long sit-in in Islamabad has not had any impact on other parts of the country. Imran Khan’s appeal for countrywide protests received little response. There were only a few small gatherings of party loyalists in upscale districts of Karachi and Lahore. The appeal for civil disobedience and the call for non-payment of taxes and utility bills became a joke. Only a few party stalwarts refused to pay toll on the Peshawar-Islamabad road and some upper-class supporters were seen arguing with restaurant managements for charging GST on the bill.

The decision to resign from the national and provincial assemblies barring Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has proved to be the biggest blunder that has not only divided the party but also increased its political isolation. The party has been left with virtually no ally. It would have served the party’s cause much better had the PTI fought its battle for reforms inside parliament too. Instead, Imran Khan declared the entire parliament to be a “den of thieves”.

Yet parliament demonstrated more maturity while standing behind the elected government; it also extended a lifeline to the PTI by supporting the demand for electoral reforms. It is also because of the urging of the opposition parties that the resignations of the PTI legislators have not yet been accepted. But that cannot be delayed for long. Sitting out of the assemblies would make it more difficult for the party to get the required legislation for electoral reforms passed.

A consensus seems to have emerged on all issues raised by the PTI except for the demand for the prime minister’s resignation. The party could have claimed credit for that and worked to consolidate its position. But it was not to be. Imran Khan seems to be in a hurry to wrap up the present dispensation and force early elections. What he is trying to do is to create a state of anarchy. And it is certainly not so difficult given the collapse of the government’s authority anyway.

A dysfunctional administration in the capital has already provided a free hand to the protesters. The latest incident when Imran Khan got his detained supporters released from police custody is a testimony to that. A growing power vacuum will surely invite extra-constitutional intervention and maybe that is what the PTI is pursuing. It is a dangerous game that may end in complete disaster. The solution of the crisis lies in democracy, however flawed it may be, and not outside the system.

Secondly while in PIA he was Appointed as Ad-hoc Briefing Manager for which he had no expertise and Neither the Grade or Group 7 Job as he was Serving in PIA in Group 5 , and has only 4-5 Years experience only just as steward of PIA serving Tea and Refreshments .

He had also Applied for Mover Over to Group 6 on basis of an MBA , which was denied as PIA has reversed this Policy for People who are not in Management and Administration of PIA as he was Crew not management .

Against which he went to Peshawar High court but was Court Moved Against him and giving a Decision that move over is not Legal and not according to PIA Policy, he applied for Appeal which was turned down as well.

BENDING RULES OF PIA VIA BRIBES AND POLITICAL INTERFERENCE:

Mr Syed Waqar Shah was Appointed as Ad-hoc Briefing Manager the real Briefing Manager Mrs. Jannat Jamshed wife of Khyber TV Director Mr. Jamshed Khan, who is Senior to him and is in Grade 7 with more the 15-18 Years of Experience is still manager in PIA Human resource Records, as Proper Briefing Manager was posted to Catering Department on Temporary Basis to Accommodate Mr. Waqar Shah who was her Assistant as Flying Crew as Ad-hoc Briefing manager .

This was done by bending the Rules and According to Rules Waqar Shah Cabin Experience cannot be counted as Management as he was cabin Crew in Designation and not Designated as Manager as Briefing Manager job is related to Management and require Scheduling Experience of at least 10 Years which he did not have at all.

He was a Cabin crew / Air Hostess and nothing more then that , his Duties Schedule is still Active in PIA even Today ,his pay slip is still that of cabin crew , as being a Cabin crew he cant be in Management as it is a Different Department and he never relinquished his duties in cabin Crew Department till he joined as Secretary of Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on 18^th December 2013.

Neither he was a manager neither he was having 10, Year experience, the PIA bended it rules because the District Manager Mr. Sahibzada Tariq Mehmood was from his Swabi Village and a Fellow Qadiani and he was Appointed on this Post and he also took bribe of Rs 500,000 from Mr Syed Waqar Shah and Mr. Syed Waqar Shah used to Send 2000, us Dollars as Bhatta as well to High Ups in head Quarters Karachi of PIA to maintain this Post to Allot flights to his Favorites by charging US 50 Dollars for each flight.  

This Shocking revelation is true and can be confirmed from Any body working in PIA , other wise why a Junior with 4 Years experience can be accommodated in a Post for which at Least  GP-7 is and Management Experience is required according to PIA own Laws and experience of at least 10 Year and it requires an inquiry into these Matter by Competent Authorities . 

 DRUGS IN OFFICE OF SYED WAQAR SHAH :

While serving as Ad-hoc and junior Base Manager Flight service at Bacha Khan International Airport Mr. Syed Waqar Shah was found to be in Possession of Heroin in His office of which was recovered by the Anti Narcotics in his Office, and was duly verified to be Heroin of 990 Gram or 1 Kilo at 1100 hrs on 12^th of July 2012.

This is demonstrated by the copy of FIR below which is obtained from Anti-Narcotics and it clearly shows it.

When this happened the Keys to his office was in his Possession and he was In charge of his office, how come somebody can put this heroin of about 1 KG in his office without his Knowledge and without Possession of the Keys to his office , it may be Noted that PIA never did any Inquiry into this Matter in Violation of its Rules and regulations of PIA and Civil Aviation both .  

Which Points to fact that Mr. Syed Waqar Shah did have means to bribe the Civil Aviation to which the Bacha Khan Airport Belongs and also PIA where he was Serving and Also the Local PIA Top Boss who is Mr. Sahibzada Tariq Mehmood as District Manager Peshawar in PIA.

It is clear fact that demonstrate his links with drug Mafia and access to money also with PTI  who could Manipulate the PIA + the Anti Narcotics and Civil Aviation ( Run by Army and Air force Officers by Bribing and corruption )

FIR was Lodged in Anti-Narcotics Department run by Army Offices in uniform  is also has a Questionable role was why when Heroin was found in such Sensitive Places as the Bacha Khan Airport in office of Incompetent and Politically connected Person to PTI Asad Qasier Relative  Syed Waqar Shah was not changed to a case and why no further Enquiry and further Investigation was carried out ?.

Why Anti Narcotics did not complete its Investigation and why it did not catch a culprit points to political Interference and corruption, Under PTI

ILLEGAL CREATION OF JOB AS SPECIAL SECRETARY PAKHTUNKHWA :

In order to save Mr. Syed Waqar Shah Relative of Assad Qasier of PTI ( Who was Previously Jamaat Islami as leader ) a Scheme was Launched to transfer him out of PIA on Deputation via a Job In Grade -19 of Special Secretary to Asad Qasier, was not Present but was Specially created for him bending Rules , he still never relinquished his Job as Cabin crew as Junior Gp-5 Person Cabin Crew having only 4-5 Years of Service in PIA, has zero Experience in  Management Post of Briefing Manager Flight Service is now a Special Secretary .

Why such Post Is created by Imran Khan party who claims to be honest while the Facts are contrary to reality .

ROLE OF RELIGIOUS PARTIES AND PTI IN CORRUPTION :

It is concerning how ,a Job was created for an Incompetent man with heroin Popping up in his office in at 1100 hrs on 12 July 2012.

This Job was Created by Acknowledgement of Jamaat Islami head of Jamaat Islami Mr. Siraj Ul haq as Finance Minister of Pakhtunkwa and special budgets was Allocated for it from poor Pakistan tax payers money at that time.

Role of Asad Qasier in corruption is more the Evident .

ROLE OF CIVIL SERVANTS IN CORRUPTION :

Also the Aviation Secretary under which both PIA and Civil Aviation and ASF works, he  is Involved who did not do Investigations of Drugs at Bacha Khan International Airport in Mr. Syed Waqar Shah Office.

Also the Director Civil Aviation who Allowed this Transfer of this Drug Baron and also un Experience and not Qualified Person while not doing any Investigation of drugs in his office .

Thirdly the Anti Narcotics did not do its Job after Launching an FIR and Nabbing the Culprit of this National Shame.

How a PIA corporation Steward was deemed fit to be Transferred from federal Government to Provincial Government of Pakhtunkwa of Unqualified and Inexperience Person and with Moral turpitude of Heroin and Drugs in His office worthy of being a Special Secretary ?

 Those who allowed this and without going into the Personal file and looking into this matter is also Criminals and are liable to Answer to people of Pakistan .

Why such Shameful person as Mr Syed Waqar Shah is rewarded in Pakistan just because he is related to Asad Qasier of PTI and he is Secretary to Speaker Pakhtunkwa Assembly and is assisting him in Haram Khori and also selling the Jobs in his constituency and also making Haram Illegal money , he has kept a Steward of PIA as his Personal Secretary while he is paid from hard earned tax Payers money .

Is it because of his Political links? This is answer that has to be asked from those responsible.

How Pakhtunkhwa Rivers are Dried up To Supply Water to Punjab and Islamabad Under PTI and MMA (Mullah Military Alliance) Agents of Punajbis

PESHAWAR, Feb 22: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on Friday demanded the review of Ghazi Barotha hydropower project due to objection to its design.

“Ghazi Barotha project should be revisited because its execution is not in line with the original design. The undue spanning of canal has caused severe water shortage in parts of our province. We’ll not allow anyone to steal our water,” provincial information minister told a seminar at the Peshawar Press Club.

Watan Welfare Society (WWS) organised the seminar titled ‘Water Supply Scheme to the Twin Cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi’.

The minister said Awami National Party had strongly resisted the construction of Kalabagh Dam and would go all-out to get the Ghazi Barotha project’s design reviewed as per the original plan.

He said the agreement of Ghazi Barotha hydropower project had been violated due to increase in the spanning of the relevant canal and therefore, water of the canal should be re-diverted.

Mr Hussain said it was unfortunate that rivers in the province had dried up but the Ghazi Barotha canal had a good flow of water.

He said it was surprising that the province had been deprived of its water resources though Council of Common Interest, which was the right forum to discuss such matters, had never approved the Ghazi Barotha project.

The minister said the project had led to the drying up of many tube wells in Swabi and thus, causing severe shortage of water in the area.

“After 18th Constitutional amendment, provinces have got more powers. Now, no one can occupy resources of others,” he said.

Earlier, WWS chairman Dr Mehsud told participants that the CDA chairman and China Machinery Engineering Company (CMEC) recently signed an agreement of water supply project to Islamabad and Rawalpindi on June 5, 2012 without taking Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on board.

He said the government and bureaucracy in the centre were bent on taking control of water reservoirs of the province.

“Bids are being made to create problems for the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Kalabagh Dam, Akori Dam and supply of water to Punjab from the province are a few instances to mention in this respect,” he said.

Mr Mehsud said the Ghazi Barotha project was designed during the Musharraf government by CDA and Rawalpindi Development Authority without permission from Indus River System Authority and the KP government.

He said the former provincial government of Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal had opposed the project and even the provincial assembly in 2007 had adopted a resolution unanimously against the supply of water from the Indus River to twin cities.

“As a result of that resolution, work on the project came to a halt. However, CDA and the Chinese firm recently signed an MoU for supplying 200 million gallons of water from Ghazi Barotha to Islamabad and Rawalpindi on daily basis,” he said.

Speakers Dr Said Alam Mehsud, Shahab Khattak, Mukhtar Bacha, Maryam Bibi and Ijaz Hoti expressed surprise that if the provincial government had not approved the project, then how its MoU was signed.

They demanded of the provincial government to take up the matter with the centre to ensure that the local residents were not deprived of their resources.
